6 Proper Ways to Sponge Bath for Fever Reduction
During the winter season, when the weather changes, the rate of illness from colds, flu, or other sicknesses often increases. When experiencing a high fever (above 38.5 degrees celsius), sponging (wiping the body with water) is an essential and highly effective first aid method to naturally lower the body temperature, especially in young children and the elderly, to prevent potential complications. Correct sponging doesn't just cool the body down; it also increases comfort and helps reduce the need for medication. Today, we share 6 steps and techniques for correct fever-reducing sponging.

6 Steps for Correct Fever-Reducing Sponging
  • Prepare Appropriate Equipment : Use room temperature water (about 25-30 degrees celsius) or slightly warm water for sponging. Do not use cold water, as this will cause blood vessels to constrict, making the body shiver and generate more heat, which prevents the fever from dropping. Prepare 2-3 small towels for wiping and a large sheet for supporting and covering the patient.
  • Turn Off Fans/AC and Reduce Clothing : Turn off fans or air conditioners to prevent the patient from shivering due to water evaporating too quickly. Then, remove all or most of the patient's clothing to allow the body to fully contact the air and water.
  • Wipe from Extremities to the Core : Use a cloth dampened with water and wring it slightly. Wipe both arms and both legs, wiping from the extremities (wrists, ankles) back toward the torso. This helps stimulate blood circulation and draws heat toward the core for dissipation. Always change the cloth to keep it cool.
  • Focus Compression on Key Points (Heat Dissipation Areas) : Place damp cloths and hold them on areas with large blood vessels and lymph nodes close to the skin to allow heat to dissipate effectively. These areas include both armpits and both groins (compress for 5-10 minutes). Also, gently wipe the forehead and neck creases.
  • Wipe Continuously and Thoroughly : Repeat the steps of wiping the arms, legs, and torso, and focusing on the heat dissipation points continuously for 10-15 minutes, until the patient feels comfortable or the temperature begins to drop. Wipe along the direction of the body hair to help the water evaporate more easily.
  • Check Temperature and Re-administer Medication When Necessary : Measure the fever again approximately 30 minutes after sponging. If the fever has not dropped (below 38.5 degrees celsius) or is accompanied by a headache, Paracetamol can be given according to the dosage prescribed by the doctor. If the fever returns, sponging can be repeated as needed.
Correct fever reducing sponging requires continuity and the appropriate water temperature to allow the body to naturally dissipate heat. Absolutely do not use alcohol to wipe the body, as it can be absorbed through the skin and be dangerous to the patient. If a high fever does not drop, or the patient exhibits other abnormal symptoms, they should be immediately taken to the hospital.
