Tiny but toxic PM2.5 — a silent threat with massive health impacts
In recent years, PM2.5 air pollution has become a growing concern — not only in Thailand but across the globe. People living in areas with high PM2.5 levels are at risk of developing serious health conditions, such as respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems.

Here are the key health risks associated with PM2.5 that everyone should be aware of :
  • Reduced lung function : PM2.5 particles cause inflammation in the respiratory system, leading to reduced lung efficiency. When breathing heavily—especially during exercise—more pollutants enter the lungs. Asthma patients and even healthy individuals may experience symptoms. Prolonged exposure can increase the risk of lung cancer.

  • Decreased exercise performance : PM2.5 reduces oxygen absorption in the lungs, making people—regardless of health status—feel tired more quickly and less active than usual.

  • Respiratory system issues : Long-term exposure to PM2.5 can cause coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing, which discourage physical activity and lead to long-term health decline.

  • Increased risk of heart, vascular, and brain diseases : PM2.5 contributes to high blood pressure, thickened blood, and arterial stiffness, increasing the risk of blood clots, heart rhythm disorders, and sudden cardiac arrest, all of which negatively affect physical activity and overall health.

  • Mental health deterioration : Living in polluted environments over time can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression, lowering motivation and energy levels, which further reduces physical activity and worsens overall well-being.

Even low levels of PM2.5 can be harmful. When going outside, it’s important to wear a face mask regularly. If you notice any unusual symptoms, don’t ignore them. Consult a doctor for proper screening and treatment.
