Rain makes your shoes wet! Be careful of athlete's foot
Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a common foot health issue during the rainy season—especially for those who walk through flood water contaminated with germs and then leave their feet wet for long periods without cleaning or drying them thoroughly. Common symptoms include flaky rashes accompanied by itching or burning sensations, peeling and cracked skin between the toes, white, swollen, and thickened skin, or fluid-filled blisters and sores.

Here are 6 essential tips to prevent and protect yourself from athlete’s foot this rainy season :

  • If you must walk through water, wear waterproof shoe covers or socks to keep your feet dry.
  • Keep a spare pair of shoes and alternate usage; sun-dry the unused pair to let UV light kill germs.
  • Wear clean, thoroughly dried socks or shoes.
  • After exposure to stagnant water, wash your feet with soap and dry them thoroughly.
  • Avoid scratching the skin—fungal infections may spread to other parts of the body.
  • If you have open wounds and cannot avoid floodwaters, wrap your feet with plastic. After exposure, soak your feet in disinfectant solution briefly before showering, then dry completely and apply antifungal ointment.

If symptoms of athlete’s foot are mild, over-the-counter antifungal creams may be effective. Use only as directed to prevent recurrence. If symptoms persist after 2 weeks or worsen, consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis. Prescription antifungal medications may be necessary for more specific treatment tailored to individual conditions.
