Check yourself in 3 minutes! What kind of chest pain is dangerous?
Chest Pain is a critical warning sign from your body. While it often signals an underlying issue, chest pain isn't always caused by heart disease—it can also stem from muscle inflammation, acid reflux, or lung conditions. Quickly and accurately assessing your symptoms helps you make a timely decision to seek medical attention before it's too late.
High-Risk Chest Pain (Risk of Acute Myocardial Infarction / Heart Attack)
If your symptoms match any of the following, suspect acute coronary artery blockage and call 1669 for an emergency ambulance immediately :
- Pain Character : Deep, heavy pressure, as if a heavy weight is crushing or squeezing the center of your chest.
- Radiating Pain : The squeezing sensation radiates up to your neck, jaw, shoulders, back, or down your left arm.
- Associated Symptoms : Cold sweats soaking your clothes, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or feeling faint.
- Duration : Continuous, unrelenting pain lasting longer than 5–10 minutes that does not ease with rest.
Lower-Risk Chest Pain (Common Alternative Causes)
- Muscle/Bone Inflammation : Sharp, localized pain that worsens when pressing directly on the spot, twisting your body, lifting objects, or stretching arms.
- Acid Reflux (GERD) : A burning sensation behind the breastbone (heartburn) that travels up toward the throat, usually occurring after heavy meals, spicy food, or lying down right away.
- Panic Attacks / Severe Anxiety : Sharp, fleeting chest pains accompanied by rapid breathing, heart palpitations, and numbness in the hands or feet, which typically subside with calm, deep breathing.
What NOT to Do During Dangerous Chest Pain
- Do NOT drive yourself to the hospital : Experiencing sudden cardiac arrest while driving poses a fatal hazard. Call emergency services (1669) so paramedics can provide immediate life support en route.
- Do NOT massage or press hard on your chest : Forceful massaging will not relieve heart-related tightness and can exacerbate muscle or cartilage inflammation.
- Do NOT wait for it to pass : Every minute counts in preserving heart muscle and saving lives during a cardiac event.
Evaluating chest pain within the first 3 minutes can save a life. Crushing central chest pain that radiates to the jaw or left arm with cold sweats signals a cardiac emergency requiring instant hospital care. Pain triggered by touch or post-meal burning points to musculoskeletal issues or GERD. Vigilance is your best defense.
