Back to School Checklist! Vaccines for your little one during the start of the school year
May 2026... It's time for the kids to go BackToSchool! Beyond new school bags and uniforms, the most important "gear" parents must prepare is a strong immune system. Schools are bustling hubs where children interact closely, making it easy for germs to spread. Checking your child’s vaccination record and reinforcing their "armor" is essential to ensure their learning journey isn't interrupted by illness.
Basic Vaccines (Essential for Every Age)
Before the first bell rings, open that pink book and check if your child is up to date on these :
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) : Prevents common school outbreaks spread through coughing and sneezing.
- JE (Japanese Encephalitis) : Protects against mosquito-borne diseases, especially during the humid back-to-school rainy season.
- DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) : A critical booster for children aged 4–6 as they transition into primary school.
In an era of shifting climates, these illnesses often peak when schools reopen :
- Influenza (Flu) : Most Important! A yearly booster is vital as virus strains evolve. It significantly reduces disease severity and hospital stays.
- Varicella (Chickenpox) : If your child hasn't had it or missed their 2nd dose, now is the time. Outbreaks in classrooms spread fast and lead to long absences.
- IPD : Protects against bacteria causing pneumonia and meningitis—highly recommended for little ones starting nursery or preschool.
- Hepatitis A : Guards against infections from contaminated food or water, which can occur when children start sharing meals at school.
- Check Health : Ensure your child is fever-free and not acutely ill on the day of the appointment.
- Mental Prep : Talk to your child kindly. Avoid threats like "If you're naughty, the doctor will give you a shot" to prevent hospital phobia.
- Post-Care : Have child-safe fever medicine ready. Observe the injection site for redness. If a high fever lasts over 2 days, consult a pediatrician.
