      Knee Osteoarthritis is a disease caused by the deterioration of the cartilage covering the knee joint, including structural and functional changes in the joint. When there is no cartilage to cushion the bones, they rub against each other, causing knee pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited mobility, which worsen over time. The knee joint may also become misaligned and unable to perform normal daily activities. Today, we would like to share some information on Knee Osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis: 

  • Knee pain
  • Crunching or popping sound in the knee
  • Knee stiffness and tightness 
  • Buckling or giving way of the knee
  • Swelling and warmth
  • Limited range of motion

Causes of Knee Osteoarthritis: 

  • Cartilage deterioration: a condition that occurs with age 
  • Increasing age: the most common cause 
  • Gender: more common in women, up to 2-3 times more than in men 
  • Heredity: those with a family history of Knee Osteoarthritis are more likely to develop it 
  • Obesity: overweight individuals or those with obesity have a higher risk of developing Knee Osteoarthritis
  • Overuse: repetitive stress on the knee joint, such as standing for long periods, lifting heavy objects, going up and down stairs frequently, kneeling, and sitting cross-legged 
  • Structural abnormalities of the knee joint: such as a misaligned knee or weak leg muscles.

      ‘Osteoarthritis of the knee’ is a common health problem in elderly individuals, which results from prolonged use of the knee joint. However, nowadays it is increasingly found in younger individuals, especially those in middle age, and the trend is continuously rising.
