3 main types of vaccines recommended during pregnancy
Vaccination during pregnancy is essential, not only protecting the mother from serious diseases but also building and passing Passive Immunity to the fetus to protect the newborn in the early period before their own vaccination schedule. There are 3 main types of vaccines recommended during pregnancy :
Influenza Vaccine
- Importance : Pregnancy lowers the immune system, making the mother susceptible to severe illness from the flu, including complications like pneumonia. The vaccine reduces these risks.
- Benefit to the Baby : The immunity passed to the baby protects newborns from the flu during the first 6 months of life, a period when the baby cannot receive the flu vaccine yet.
- Recommended Timing : Can be administered at any stage of pregnancy, but it is recommended to get it immediately upon knowing you are pregnant during an outbreak, or annually according to the season.

Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Acellular Pertussis)
- Importance : This vaccine is very important in preventing Whooping Cough (Pertussis), which can be life-threatening for newborns, as infants cannot receive the pertussis vaccine until they are 2 months old.
- Benefit to the Baby : Immunity from the vaccine is transferred to the fetus at its highest level.
- Recommended Timing : Should be administered with every pregnancy during 27 - 36 weeks of gestation to allow the maximum time for immunity to be built and passed to the infant.

COVID-19 Vaccine
- Importance : Pregnant women are at higher risk than the general population of developing severe symptoms if infected with COVID-19, including the risk of premature birth. Vaccination helps reduce these risks.
- Benefit to the Baby : Immunity to COVID-19 has been reported in the umbilical cord and breast milk of mothers who were vaccinated during pregnancy.
- Recommended Timing : Recommended to be administered according to doctor's advice; usually, it can be given at any stage of pregnancy. Consult your doctor if other vaccinations are due to prioritize the schedule.

Pregnant mothers are critical individuals who require maximum protection. Receiving all three types of vaccines—Influenza, Tdap, and COVID-19—is the most worthwhile health investment during pregnancy. It not only reduces the risk of the mother facing severe illness but also provides the first "Immunity Inheritance" to the unborn baby, protecting them during the most vulnerable first months of life.
